Power of Movies and how the Victor Dictates HistoryLetters From ReadersPolitics side - I suppose American made movies should be just taken to be just that - movies made primarily for an American audience , and should never be a substitute for history lessons. But then in the powerful tsunami of popular American culture - it would be almost tempting to believe that only the Americans fought during D-day( Saving Private Ryan ) when the British , the Canadians suffered equally horrendous casualties on other fronts during the Normandy landing or that the Americans were the ones that cracked the German's U-boat codes ( U - 571 ) when it was the British. or simply how even some Malaysians pooh-pooh our own soldiers gallant effort in rescuing the US Rangers. Unfortunately that's the power of movies - making dreams or myths alive. Or as the famous dictum goes, the victor dictates history. |
