| | What The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) Thinks About Permanent Residents Who Want To TravelLetters From ReadersAbout The INSYou rote that "The attitude here is one of utter amazement that someone would want to leave the US for a long visit to go somewhere else". I find this strange. First they make immigrants jump through hoops, and make them answer some utterly humiliating questions. Then they make them wait... for years or even decades. By the time that happens, people have lost their initial enthusiasm, settled down, etc. Then they get a call out of the blue to come for an interview and they are told to suddenly go to the US and stay there. The INS seems to forget that immigrants have to tie up things back in their birth countries. They have to sell their property, businesses, etc. This takes time. Yet other immigrants have sick family members or have to attend to other emergencies. A PR should have ALL the same privileges as a US citizen, except perhaps voting rights. Given this, PR's should be allowed to come and go as and when they like, in accordance to their time schedules, not the INS's. | |
