Do You Snore?

What is snoring?

Snoring is a noise produced primarily with inspiratory respiration during sleep, owing to vibration of the soft palate and the pillars of the oropharyngeal inlet. All snorers have incomplete obstruction of the upper airway, and many habitual snorers have complete episodes of upper airway obstruction.

Does Snoring Present Any Dangers?

Snoring may be more than an acoustical nuisance. Systemic hypertension, cardiac dysfunction, angina pectoris and cerebral infarction are more frequent among habitual snorers. The immediate rise in systemic blood pressure during snoring has been confirmed by polygraphic recordings.4

What Should Doctors Do?

All doctors, including physicians, chiropractors, dentists, psychologists and others, should ask their patients if they snore.

The doctor won't have to interrupt their patient's presenting complaint asking about snoring. There are questionaires available that will easily help the doctor determine if the patient's snoring needs further investigation.

What Can Patients Do?

If you know that you snore, or someone has told you that you snore, please mention it to your doctor the next time you have an appointment. Sleep Disorders are probably still one of the most undiagnosed life threatening problems in existence. And many sleep disorders can be easily cured. Drammatic improvements in the quality of life, and ceasation of other problems, can result from getting help for a previously undiagnosed sleep disorder.
