Recently I've been playing with the software Reason, by Propellerheads. This is fantastic software that simulateds a whole rack of synthesizers, sequences, drum machines, samplers, mixers, audio special effects, all within your computer. It can play some fantastically complicated compositions. I have been having fun making arrangements of various classical MIDI files that I have found in different places. I don't know much about music, but I am sure having fun learning to use this software.

Here are some of the music related searches that I have done recently:

  • Computer Music
    • tomita midi

Isao Tomita has done some wonderful arrangements of classical music. I thought I would search the net to see if I could find any midi files by him.

This site seems to have a lot of .MIDI files: http://www.kunstderfuge.com/mozart.htm. They have many pages of MIDI files for famous composers like Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and others. All of the MIDI files said that they were copyright by one person or another.

    • GPL midi
    • GPL "midi files" -
      • http://www.ulujain.org/midis.php - MIDI files for Ultima Underworld.
      • http://www.ulujain.org/eqmp3.php - Listing of MP3 songs in the everquest game, but the actual songs are not here.
      • http://www.ibiblio.org/mcmahon/emusic-l/ - This had the following sad story: I got mail from a gentleman who is facing a problem that I'm afraid may be far too common in the future: I inherited after my father's death, a collection of his compositions in the form of midi files. They were produced using a very old version of Mark of the Unicorn's Performer software (ver. 1. something) running on an original 512 k (Fat) Macintosh (circa. 1985). The Mac is long since gone and I have been trying to resurrect the work my father left.

None of my current software can read the midi files. Mark of the Unicorn have never answered my inquiries and a number of years have passed with no progress.

It's very probable that in the future, a lot of good music will exist only as files in a proprietary format. And when the platform, or software, or operating system, or keydisk, or any number of other things disappears, so does the means of accessing that music.

I hope there's someone out there who runs Performer (or something else that can read these files) who can help him out. If you can help, please contact me and I'll his email address on to you.

      • http://yann.lecun.com/ - This fellow has a little bit about music on his website.

http://yann.lecun.com/ex/fun/index.html#kahn.html - Funny story about how this guy is not the evil twin of Philippe Kahn, founder of Borland and my former boss.

    • GPL "library of midi files" - Turned up nothing on alltheweb.
    • "library of midi files" - 85 results on alltheweb.
    • "public domain midi files" - again 85 results.
      • This sounds hopeful:

--- Sadly just an empty page when I went to look at it.

Here is a very nicepage about someone's trip to Paris: http://noehill.com/med/med2001/default.asp - It is so nice, I thought maybe it was a great example of the use of style sheets. It uses style sheets, but not enough, it also uses old fashioned tables for it's layout. I've recently been studying CSS and how to use it to specify the presentation of a page, instead of using things like tables to do so.
This page has a few "public domain midi's" on it, courtesy of the Classical Midi Collection. Trying to go there, http://www.classicalmidiconnection.com/cmc/index.htm, got me this colorful response:

        Forbidden

You do not have permission to access the requested file on this server.
Interestingly, this site was accessible from a server in California. They area apparently locking out foreign countries like Malaysia from accessing their site.

They had a link for the 1812 Overture, but all you get is a redirect to a page full of banners.

I just sent them this message:

It looks like you are blocking access from Malaysia. I am on vacation here,
and am trying to get some good midi files to share with my son, so we can
learn how to use a piece of music software called Reason. I get "You do not
have permission" when I try to go to your site.....

Fortunately I have another machine back in California running remote
desktop. I tried accessing your site from there, but when I right click a
MIDI (for example 1812 overture by Tchaikovsky), and select "Save Target
As", instead I get a redirect some page called "clavier.htm" which just
looks like a bunch of banners.....

It seems like doing a normal click might actually load the MIDI file, but it
loads in another pane of IE, and while it probably sounds nice in my office
back in California, it doesn't do me much good here. I don't see any option
to be able to save the MIDI from this copy of media player embedded into IE.

        Thanks for your help...

        670 Go Forth for God
671 Lord, Dismiss Us with Thy Blessing
672 God Be with You till We Meet Again
673 God Be with You till We Meet Again (R.V.W.)
674 See the Morning Sun Ascending
675 As the Sun Doth Daily Rise
678 Rise to Greet the Sun
        679 O Splendor of God's Glory Bright
682 All Praise to Thee, My God, This Night
683 The Day Is Past and Over
685 Now, on Land and Sea Descending
687 Day Is Dying in the West
688 God, That Madest Earth and Heaven
690 The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Ended
694 Come, Ye Thankful People, Come
        696 America the Beautiful
697 America (My Country, 'Tis of Thee)
        698 God of the Ages
699 Come, and Let Us Sweetly Join
        700 Abide with Me
701 When We All Get to Heaven
702 Sing with All the Saints in Glory
        708 Rejoice in God's Saints
709 Come, Let Us Join Our Friends Above
        710 Faith of Our Fathers
        711 For All the Saints
712 I Sing a Song of the Saints of God
        714 I Know Whom I Have Believed
715 Rejoice, the Lord Is King
717 The Battle Hymn of the Republic
718 Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending
720 Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying
723 Shall We Gather at the River
        724 On Jordan's Stormy Banks I Stand
727 O What Their Joy and Their Glory Must Be
730 O Day of God, Draw Nigh
731 Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken
732 Come, We That Love the Lord
        733 Marching to Zion

    • reason redrum conga - The Reason 2.5 software by Propellerheasds is my new favorite music software. It took me a while to find the conga patches, so I was looking on the net for some good conga sounds. I finally found them, look in Redrum House Kit 2, and House Kit 5, as well as conga and congaslap for the Substractor synth. Playing the conga from the synth (which you can control either via the Matrix pattern controller, the redrum controller (use the gate from the redrum channel), or from the main sequencer), lets you vary the tone of the conga slightly on different beats, as you could do for real depending on where you hit it at.
