I am always amazed when people use ridiculously insecure passwords like the name of their favorite pet, or even just a single letter or digit. "Oh, I didn't want to have to type too much" is about the most ridiculous excuse I've heard for chosing a single letter as a password.

But, it can be difficult to think up a really good password. Here is some password advice, a list of some of the things you should not use as a password:

• your birthdate
• your name
• your children's name
• your spouse's name
• maiden names from your family
• parts of your social security number
• your drivers license number
• your mother's maiden name
• words from the dictionary.

When you rule out all these possibilities, it becomes more difficult to think up a good password.

And, if you don't use any of those easy to remember things, how will you ever remember your password? I'm going to also recommend that you choose a unique password for every system that you log into! Security isn't easy, but it is well worth avoiding the problems with someone compromising your password.

So how will you remember possibly dozens of strange and different passwords for every system you use? I'm sorry to suggest something as low tech as keeping a list, but there really isn't any substitute for that. If you pick one strange password, and then use it everywhere, you are creating a significant risk of compromise. Most systems do not store your password in plaintext, but some might. (Certainly any site that allows you to 'retrieve' your password is probably storing it in plaintext somewhere.) You'll never really know if someone else can read your plaintext password.

Also, most security professionals recommend changing your password from time to time. At least once every six months, sometimes every month. It depends on how secure you want to be.

One way you might choose a password is to make a combination of two or three words, and combine them with a number or two. Add some strange caPitAlizATion, and you might have a good password.

I've tried to create some passwords that are easy to write down, and might be kind of catchy and easy to remember too. Pick one that you like. Don't see one that you like? Refresh the page once or twice, and this page will display new passwords for you. I have no clue how many different passwords are possible, but I've never seen a repeat.

Also, just so you know: I don't store the passwords shown on this page. Besides, I don't know who you are, or where you might use them. But if you want even more security, pick a password from the list below, and then customize it in some way. Add a letter, subtract a digit, transpose some letters, capitalize a couple of letters, whatever you want to personalize it. Most systems recommend you have a minimum password length of at least 6 characters.
